I was born with Marcus Gunn jaw-winking syndrome, a rare neurological condition that causes my eye to move when I chew, talk, or move my jaw. From the outside, it can look like my eye “winks” or even bulges slightly when I’m eating, something that’s been part of me for as long as I can remember.
Growing up, my family knew about my condition early on, and while it sparked curiosity from others, it never felt like something I needed to hide. People would notice it most during meals, and yes, I got plenty of questions and stares, but over time, I learned to see it differently. What once could’ve been an insecurity became something I genuinely embraced.
Surgery is an option, but I chose not to. Marcus Gunn syndrome is a part of who I am, and instead of trying to “fix” it, I decided to own it. I’ve even grown to love it. It’s unique, it’s rare, and it’s a reminder that confidence doesn’t come from perfection, it comes from self-acceptance.
Today, I use my platform to share my life openly and honestly, whether that’s through everyday moments, beauty, travel, or conversations about confidence and embracing what makes us different. My goal is to show others that you don’t have to fit a mold to feel beautiful or worthy, you just have to be yourself.
If my story helps even one person feel more comfortable in their own skin, then sharing it is more than worth it.
